Benefits of Plant-Based Oils - New Study

Did you know several plant-based oils have more benefits than non-plant-based oils?

According to the Harvard Gazette (from Harvard University), "Substituting butter with plant-based oils daily may lower risk of premature death by up to 17 percent, according to a new study out of Mass General Brigham, Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health, and the Broad Institute."1

The actual study results published in JAMA in March, 2025 come to this study conclusion: "In this cohort study, higher intake of butter was associated with increased mortality, while higher plant-based oils intake was associated with lower mortality. Substituting butter with plant-based oils may confer substantial benefits for preventing premature deaths."2

And, picking up the actual study's terminology, consider this: "There was a statistically significant association between higher intakes of canola, soybean, and olive oils and lower total mortality..."2

Specifically summarized, "The researchers examined diet and health data from 200,000 people followed for more than 30 years and found that higher consumption of plant-based oils — especially soybean, canola, and olive oil — was associated with lower total, cancer, and cardiovascular disease mortality, whereas butter use was linked with increased risk of total and cancer mortality."1

As we can conclude, a study with over 200,000 people and more than 30 years of data, is no small insignificant study. The proof is there for all of us to read.

Plus, there is other good news. It's easy to consume these seeds or beans with these oils in foods, sauces, drinks, and more. If you want an example, soy milk naturally contains soybean oil because it's a water extract of whole soybeans, and soybeans are naturally rich in oil. In addition, tofu contains soybean oil.
