Plant-Based Proteins
Can you get complete proteins from nuts, beans, fruits, vegetables, or grains? Yes!
First, a protein primer: amino acids are the building blocks of proteins. While your body can make some proteins, you must obtain nine through your diet. Of the 20 different amino acids that the body needs to function properly, the nine essential amino acids are Histidine, Isoleucine, Leucine, Lysine, Methionine, Phenylalanine, Threonine, Tryptophan, and Valine.
A complete protein is a protein with all of the 9 essential amino acids. Do some plant-based foods contain all of the essential amino acids? Yes, several plant-based foods contain adequate amounts of all nine essential amino acids!1,2. They are:
- Tofu, Tempeh, and Edamame (Soy Protein)
- Pea Protein
- Quinoa
- Buckwheat
- Amaranth
- Ezekiel bread
- Spirulina
- Hemp Seeds
- Chia Seeds
- Nutritional Yeast
- Mycoprotein (Quorn)
And, some plant-based foods paired with other plant-based foods together also make up the essential amino acids in a complete protein. Examples are:
- Rice and Beans
- Pita and Hummus
- Peanut Butter Sandwich (with whole grain bread)
Of course, there are recommended amounts of daily protein you should consume and you can learn more about proteins and combining foods for complete proteins in our references. 1,2
The best part is that it's easy to consume these plant-base proteins in foods, sauces, drinks, sides, snacks, and more. For example; soy milk, tofu, bean dishes, cereals, and more.
At Garden of Goodness, we have amazingly tasty meals, sides, and snacks that include foods with proteins.
