    Trending Plant-Based Health Topics

Nutritional health research is on the rise. Health concerns due to population shifts, huge health insurance costs, and more are on the rise. And better science is coming out every year.

Let's do a recap of the big 5 trending health topics that are being researched and studied (or debated):

    • Inflammation / Seed oils: Plant-based diets are anti-inflammatory and provide enormous benefits. Inflammatory foods, seed oils, and fats are being researched and studied as such and the plant-based diet ameliorates the risks.

      For example, the following articles:
The pros and cons of seed oils, and how to incorporate them in your diet stated this "However, it’s important to keep in mind that many processed, packaged foods contain seed oils — which is sometimes why seed oils are thought of as unhealthy. “We do know that diets high in processed foods are linked to poorer health outcomes,” says Ewoldt. “The seed oil is not the likely driver for negative health effects. These processed foods also tend to have higher levels of refined carbohydrates, salt and sugar, which are all things we know in excess can impact health negatively.”
Processed foods — like chips, baked goods and certain breakfast cereals — are associated with a higher risk of cancer, stroke, obesity, diabetes, high blood pressure and other conditions — and even premature death."

    • Heart Health / Cholesterol: is constantly being studied, and time and time again, plant-based diets are shown to be great for hypertension, cardiovascular health, and much more.

      For example, the following article:
Cardiovascular health and cancer risk associated with plant based diets: An umbrella review with this conclusion "Plant-based diets appear beneficial in reducing cardiometabolic risk factors, as well as CVDs, cancer risk and mortality...."

    • Colon health / Colon Cancer: Colon-based cancers seem to be on the rise. Plant-based foods high in fiber, such as fruits, vegetables, and whole grains, are associated with improved gut biome and bowel health.

      For example, the following article:
Healthy and unhealthy plant-based diets in relation to the incidence of colorectal cancer overall and by molecular subtypes stated: "While unhealthy plant-based diet enriched with refined grains and sugar is associated with higher CRC incidence, healthy plant-based diet rich in whole grains, fruits and vegetables is associated with lower incidence of CRC, especially KRAS-wildtype CRC."

    • Gut Biome (or Diet) / Alzheimer's: Again Plant-based foods high in fiber, such as fruits, vegetables, and whole grains combined with vitamins, minerals, and nutrients aid in a healthy gut biome. The gut biome in relation to diseases such as Alzheimer's is currently under big research.

      For example, the following article:
Can a vegan diet, exercise and meditation halt Alzheimer's disease? stated "Dr. Rudy Tanzi, director of the McCance Center for Brain Health at Massachusetts General Hospital and co-author of the diet and exercise study, said the new research suggests a vegetarian diet and regular exercise reduced amyloid in patients.
"It's almost like a mini-Leqembi result," said Tanzi, referring to the amyloid-clearing drug that won FDA approval last year. "So it's pretty astonishing."

    • Obesity / Weight Management: Plant-based foods high in protein and fiber, such as fruits, vegetables, and whole grains combined, can help curb appetite, improve bowel movements, and help people lose weight due to eating water-rich (low-in-calorie) fruits and vegetables which help reduce their desire to eat.

      For example, the following article:
The Benefits of Plant-Based Nutrition: Obesity & Weight Management stated "Individuals consuming more plant-based diets have lower rates of overweight and obesity than those whose diets include or emphasize meat and refined foods. Plant-based patterns are lower in fat and cholesterol and promote both weight loss and long-term healthy weight maintenance. Fiber and water in whole plant foods promote satiety with lower caloric density more than animal-based foods, thus allowing the body to reach its natural weight setpoint without deprivation."

So, you can see, that research is ongoing. Let's keep an eye out for studies and research so we can make the best choices for our body while fueling it with healthy food!
