    Do Plant-Based Diets Improve Sleep?

Sleep is complex but necessary. Not only do we need sleep to repair our bodies, but adequate sleep is also necessary to optimally function when we are awake. But is a lack of sleep genetic, environmental, or something else? And how does a diet affect our sleep?

Let's first state some amazing sleep benefits of eating plant-based. Plant-based diets are:

    • Rich in Nutrients: Plant-based diets are high in vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants that support overall health and can improve sleep. For example, magnesium found in leafy greens and nuts helps regulate sleep by maintaining healthy levels of GABA, a neurotransmitter that promotes relaxation.

    • Low in Saturated Fats: Diets high in saturated fats can disrupt sleep patterns. Plant-based diets, which are typically lower in saturated fats, can help maintain better sleep quality.

    • High in Fiber: Foods rich in fiber, such as fruits, vegetables, and whole grains, are associated with deeper, more restorative sleep. Fiber helps regulate blood sugar levels, preventing spikes and crashes that can disrupt sleep.

    • Reduced Inflammation: Plant-based diets are anti-inflammatory, which can improve sleep by reducing discomfort and promoting relaxation.

    • Better Weight Management: Maintaining a healthy weight through a plant-based diet can reduce the risk of sleep apnea and other sleep disorders.

But are there any studies or proof that eating a plant-based can improve sleep?

Yes, there are. Many studies show the effects of eating patterns and nutrition on sleep. One nutrition website has multiple studies and information, specifically Can Plant-Based Nutrition Help You Sleep Better? - T Colin Campbell Center for Nutrition Studies1

But we also wanted to point out this mini-review specifically:
According to the study's conclusion "In summary, plant-rich diets, characterized by their high fiber content, melatonin precursors, isoflavones and positive effects on the gut microbiome, hold promise in improving sleep quality and addressing sleep-related disorders, including OSA and obesity-associated sleep disturbances. As we strive for a more comprehensive understanding of the relationship between plant-rich diets and sleep, future research will play a pivotal role in advancing this field. Clinicians should consider advocating for the incorporation of minimally processed, fiber-rich plant foods in holistic approaches to managing sleep problems."2

And, here is a great part: It is easy to eat healthy foods that help you sleep.
