    Plant-based Diets Reduce Hypertension

According to a recent study, ' diets high in fruits and vegetables are found to lower blood pressure, reduce cardiovascular risk, and improve kidney health due to their base-producing effects.'1. Furthermore, the analysis stressed that "hypertension-related chronic kidney disease and its cardiovascular mortality are increasing." and "Heart disease is the number one reason that patients with chronic kidney disease die." 1

But are there any studies or proof that eating a plant-based diet reduces blood pressure?

Yes, there is. In a five-year study with people who had hypertension but not diabetes, researchers had study participants add 2-4 cups of base-producing fruits and vegetables in addition to their usual daily food intake, and some study participants were prescribed NaHCO3 (acid-reducing sodium bicarbonate, which is common baking soda) tablets in two daily doses of 4-5 650 mg tablets.1

    What were the results?

According to the study "The results of the study show that both fruits and vegetables and NaHCO3 improved kidney health, but only fruits and vegetables, and not NaHCO3, reduced blood pressure and improved indices of cardiovascular disease risk."1

Specifically, Maninder Kahlon, PhD, Department of Population Health, Dell Medical School – The University of Texas at Austin, explained as part of his analysis "This supports our recommendation that fruits and vegetables should be 'foundational' treatment for patients with hypertension, because we accomplish all three goals (kidney health, lower blood pressure, and reduced cardiovascular disease risk) with fruits and vegetables, and we can do so with lower medication doses."1

The actual medical research used this as the foundation of the study background: "Low acid diets are also associated with reduced chronic kidney disease and cardiovascular disease, and fruits and vegetables or oral sodium bicarbonate (NaHCO3) lowers dietary acid."2

What were the main results of this study? An amazing result was that "Chronic kidney disease progression was slower in participants receiving fruits and vegetables or oral NaHCO3"2  After analyzing data the researchers stated a strong conclusion "The trial supports fruits and vegetables as foundational hypertension treatment to reduce chronic kidney disease progression and cardiovascular disease risk." 2

And, in addition to the study, we already know plant-based diets help support good blood pressure and heart health because a healthy plant-based diet

    • Is High in Nutrients: Plant-based diets are rich in potassium, magnesium, and fiber, which are known to help lower blood pressure.
    • Is Low in Sodium: These diets typically contain less sodium compared to diets high in processed foods and animal products.
    • Contains Antioxidants: Fruits and vegetables are high in antioxidants, which can reduce inflammation and improve blood vessel function.
    • Contains Healthy Fats: Plant-based diets often include healthy fats from sources like nuts, seeds, and avocados, which can improve heart health.
    • Is Great for Weight Management: Such diets can help with weight loss or maintenance, which is beneficial for blood pressure control.

And, here is another great part: It is easy to eat heart-healthy foods as part of a balanced plant-based diet.
